ICOM Energy Association

Representing the manufacturers and importers of industrial and commercial heating products manufactured and sold throughout the UK, ICOM Energy Association provides the focus for the industry to promote best practice, standards, training and representation at European and UK Government levels.

Indeed, it is through ICOM Energy Association that the industry is not only able to ensure that its interests are understood, but also that current and future legislation across a wide range of areas from building and energy efficiency through to emissions and standards, is designed to be practical, implementable and measureable.

With almost 75 years experience of representing the industrial boiler and heating industry under a range of names – most recently the British Combustion Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (BCEMA) – ICOM Energy Association was formed in 2005, and members now represent 95% of the commercial heating equipment sold in the UK.

Within the organisation there are six specialist sections representing UK Commercial Boilers, Industrial Process & Packaged Burners, Air & Radiant Heaters, Industrial Boilers, Direct Fired Water Heaters and Components, within each of which is unrivalled technological and commercial expertise within the area.

Supporting Climate Change Legislation

As the world faces up to the problems of Climate Change and CO2 emissions, heating systems, both commercial and domestic, have been at the forefront in improving energy efficiency.

Working closely with the SBGI and the Hotwater & Heating Information Council (HHIC), ICOM Energy Association has been a key player in assisting UK Government departments, including Defra, the Department of Communities and Local Government and the Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform to develop and implement new legislation such as the Part L Building Regulations and more recently work on the forthcoming Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. These form a vital element in the Government’s stated aim to achieve tough new CO2 targets over the next 50 years.

The organisation also puts on events to assist users of commercial heating systems to reduce their energy usage, bringing down their fuel bills and reducing their Carbon footprint.

Representing the Industry

A key role of ICOM Energy Association is to represent the interests of its members across UK and Europe, first as an influential member of the European Heating Industry, but also with other non-governmental organisations and trade associations such as FETA, CIBSE, BRE, ESTA, CEA, OFTEC and BSRIA, along with professional engineering institutes and universities.

The organisation represents the industry on all related industrial standards within BSI and CEN to ensure new industry and revised standards are both practical and can be adhered to across the EU. Legislation has a significant impact on the industry and it is ICOM Energy Association’s role to ensure that, wherever possible, legislation is fairly implemented across all countries.

Supporting the Industry

All trade associations are measured on their commercial and technical support for their members, assisting in enabling them to become more competitive and face a changing market. At ICOM Energy Association, that support also extends to accessing research & development facilities and overseas missions, but also to the vital area of training. Like all of UK industry, the commercial heating sector suffers from a lack of young and able engineers to manufacture, commission, service and maintain equipment. Working closely with NVQ organisations, the Sector Skills Council and a university, a key objective is to create initiatives to address this situation.
