Utility Networks

The Utility Networks division of the SBGI represents the onshore gas industry supply chain in all sectors of network operations from ‘beach-to-meter’. In addition the division is seeking to stretch its representation into areas ‘beyond gas’ led by its members’ wider business interests in related sectors, for example in utility street works, connections, pipeline equipment and operations, and metering. The division’s membership now stands close to100 companies and includes gas distribution network operators, network engineering contractors and equipment providers, metering and metering services companies, and gas storage operators. Over 50% of member companies have multi-utility business interests and the division is further strengthened by its Associate members representing consultancy groups, systems providers and professional services organisations.

The Utility Networks division’s services are focussed on four key objectives:
  • to provide advocacy and representation for members on safety, commercial, regulatory, technical and environmental matters, and to influence key decision makers in Government, Ofgem and other organisations relevant to their business
  • to keep members informed through targeted information services on all matters relevant to the gas industry as a whole, and the utility networks supply chain in particular
  • to provide networking opportunities through member group meetings, seminars and external events
  • to facilitate business development in UK and overseas markets through bench-marking, market studies, exhibitions and trade missions.

Key industry issues for the immediate future include meeting the challenges of the Gas Distribution Price Control review for the period 2008 – 2013 (including its incentives for innovation and discretionary awards), on-going development and implementation of gas industry standards, reviews by the HSE of both the domestic and onshore gas safety regimes, ratification of the Energy and Planning Reform Bills, and implementation of the Traffic Management Act. Smart metering for the domestic sector remains an issue for consultation and resolution. In the longer term, development of bio-gas as an important contributor to renewable energy supply and zero-carbon new homes will focus the industry on new challenges and opportunities. In the international arena the division remains focussed on delivering value-adding intelligence on the world’s developing energy markets and promoting the supply chain capabilities of its members.

The effectiveness of the Utility Networks division relies on active engagement with and by the staff of member companies, facilitated and supported by a small but highly competent secretariat team based in the Leamington Spa office. An active programme of member group meetings is complemented by an industry seminar programme embracing street works, connections, regulation, metering, strategic change, gas industry development, and gas storage. In broadening the scope of the division’s interests and appeal, many of these excellent events are undertaken jointly with other representative bodies and professional organisations from across the energy and utilities industry.
