Energy Industry rises to the challenge to raise over £228 000 for charity

BG Energy ChallengeForty teams from companies including Centrica, Hess and Amec joined hosts BG Group in Aviemore, Scotland to participate in the 15th BG Energy Challenge – UK, the largest annual fundraising and networking event for the energy industry. The event took place on the 8 – 10 July and saw teams undertake three days of activity which tested their mental, physical and strategic capabilities to the limit.

The event itself consisted of a range of challenges including cycling, orienteering and construction and after five stages defending champions Team 1 BG Group Strategy, who demonstrated outstanding team work and determination, finished as overall winners.

James Caswell, Captain of Team 1 BG Group Strategy said: “We are absolutely over the moon about our win! The key to our success was team work, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of all the team and using these to our advantage. It was important to be open and communicate with each other and listen to one another’s ideas. We will definitely be back next year to try and make it three in a row.”

As well as providing an opportunity for teams to network, the event raised vital funds for CARE International, the overseas aid agency, and Sparks, the children’s medical research charity. This year teams raised just over £228 000 taking the total raised by the UK event since 1996 to more than £2.5 million. BG Energy Challenge Teams

Sir Geoff Hurst, MBE, President of Sparks and Ambassador of the BG Energy Challenge 2010 – UK, who competed in the event as the Leader of the Charity Team said: “I’m delighted to support the BG Energy Challenge and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole weekend. The sense of achievement for teams who took part is fantastic but most importantly the rewards for charities such as Sparks, who are reliant on the donations of organisations like BG Group, are invaluable.”
