Drax outlines its ambition for future without coal

Drax BiomassDrax, which provides 7 per cent of the UK's electricity, has proposed a £2 billion project to build three dedicated biomass-burning generators in the UK in a joint venture with Siemens, the German engineering group. However, the company has said more guarantees for long-term support for biomass as a form of renewable energy should be provided by Government to enable the project to go ahead. There is no commitment to subsidise biomass burning beyond 2013, yet offshore wind farms that are erected before 2013 will receive a 20-year guarantee of favourable subsidies. Drax has said that it hopes to be able to demonstrate an investment case for its dedicated biomass generators by the end of this year.
